I’ve been building links for over a decade, and I still see the same confusion: what exactly is a backlink, and does it still matter? The short answer is yes — but not all links are created equal. In this cluster, I’ve gathered 26 guides that cover the absolute basics. Think of it as your starting point. Whether you’re a beginner or just need a refresher, these pages will help you understand the mechanics behind links, why Google still uses them, and how to think about them strategically. I’ll share my own experiences, including what I’ve learned from mistakes, so you can skip the trial and error.
I don’t believe in hype. A link from a relevant page with real traffic is usually more valuable than ten links from random directories. That doesn’t mean DR is irrelevant — but it should never be your only selection criterion. Throughout these guides, I’ll explain why certain types of links work and others don’t, based on evidence and my own testing.
If you’re new here, I recommend starting with the three guides I highlight below. They’ll give you a solid foundation before diving into the more specific topics like contextual links, forum backlinks, or Google AI Overviews.

How I use these guides
I keep these guides as a personal reference and update them as I learn. They’re not meant to be read in order — pick what interests you. Here are a few I often point newcomers to:
Start with these three
If you only have time for three guides, start here:
- What is Link Building – the absolute foundation.
- Types of Backlinks – understand the landscape.
- Importance of Backlinks for SEO – why it matters.
What I skip or push back on
I skip anything that promises quick results through manipulative tactics. Buying links from private blog networks or link farms? Not worth the risk. I also push back on the idea that you need a specific number of backlinks to rank — it’s about quality and relevance, not a magic number. Another thing I avoid is chasing high DR without checking relevance. A DR 90 site about pet food linking to your SaaS tool? Probably useless.

Frequently asked questions
What is a backlink?
A backlink is a link from one website to another. Search engines like Google treat them as votes of confidence. I explain more in my guide on what is link building.
Do backlinks still matter in 2026?
Yes, they remain a core ranking factor. But the quality and relevance of the link matter far more than the quantity. I cover this in depth in my guide on the importance of backlinks for SEO.
How many backlinks do I need to rank?
There’s no fixed number. It depends on your niche, competition, and the quality of your links. I discuss this in my guide on how many backlinks needed to rank.
What's the difference between dofollow and nofollow?
Dofollow links pass link equity (ranking power), while nofollow links do not. Both have their place. See my guide on dofollow vs nofollow for details.
